Seems the longer I live in Japan, the more Harper does to make me feel embarrassed to be Canadian. Fortunately for the Japanese tourists, they are distracted by the northern lights and Anne of Green Gables which should cover just enough how worse the country is getting.
Did the shopkeeper of the gay store on Bank st. post anything controversial about this yet?

I think all the controversy has come from this:
But in addition to the residency requirement, a submission from a federal government lawyer in response to the couple's case cites another reason for refusing to grant the divorce — that they are not legally married.
Documents released Thursday show the government arguing that "in order for a marriage to be legally valid under Canadian law, the parties to the marriage must satisfy both the requirements of the place where the marriage is celebrated... and the requirements of the law of domicile of the couple with regard to their legal capacity to marry one another."

This was a legal screw up, not a shadowy conservative plot. The globe broke the story in a really sensationalistic and inaccurate way. I dislike the guy too, but it'd be shortsighted to see Harper's specter behind every social injustice in Canada. Here are some fresh links on the story, along with federal clarification on the continued validity of Canadian same sex marriages of foreigners.
