Coming soon to a vacant lot near you!

 Hi Ottawa,

I need your help. I am a visual artist from Montreal who is planning an art installation in your fair city this summer, and I am in search of the perfect location.

The ideal location site for this installation is a barren dirt lot in the city where construction has left it empty and no plans for development have been advertised. Site should be exposed to plenty of sun and be located in a fairly well trafficked area.

Do you know of a place like this? I bet you walk by one of these everyday without even realizing it... Tell me about it!
If you are curious about the art installation I am planning you can read more about it here.

This is a picture of a lot I found in Montreal that shows you kind of what I am talking about.

West End, corner of Carling Avenue and Bayshore Drive - you can google map it, and then use street view. It is not as nice, green or appealing as the lot pictured above, instead it consists of only concrete barriers and gravel. It used to be a gas station, and has been advertised for sale for a good 3 years now, with no takers.

Thanks for the tip! Hrrm, the gravel might be an issue but maybe not as I was planning on trucking in a bunch of dirt anyway.....
It would be wonderful to be able to transform an old gas station into a garden!
I am looking into it. Thanks again.

Oh hey! I should have figured you'd be in here!
I should ask YOU about the neighbourhoods I am being pointed towards as I have no way to know what they are actually like.

There's a lot at the corner of Bank St. and Ridgemont Ave. in the south end that's just got grass about two feet high, looks like noone wants to use it for anything. It's been listed for sale for awhile. You can see it on Street View.

Hoping I didn't step out of line by passing word along to Spacing Ottawa...?

Florence and Bank, right down town. My apartment used to be there, then it burned down. Very sad. It's been 5 years and they've done nothing with it. I would be happy to see someone put some life back in that space.

Oh wow! That looks ideal! You don't happen to remember who used to own your building by any chance?

Some old asian man and his wife. I think they might have lived on frank street or whatever that street is that's by Staples. It was a rental company that took care of everything tho.

Not from that lot unfortunately. We did everything we could to contact them, called their lawyers, went to their houses and left notes... and nadda.
We finally were offered a lot that came with 3rd party liability insurance and although it's less than ideal for our mandate of sprucing up a dead zone we've decided to go with it. You can check out the art installation at the Arts Court (corner of Daly and Nicholas). We are also putting some art into the lot on the corner of Daly and Waller where all the drunks from the mission hang out as that fits a little bit better with our original intention.
We are gearing up to do this again in the spring as we will have a larger window to negotiate with landowners before we lose the opportunity for things to grow. I am viewing this year as a trial run.

it's not a big lot, but there's a decent sized desloate space on bronson just north of carling, next to the mcdonald's and across the street from the gas station.
