vegan restaurants?

i've become friends with someone who is a vegan. i've never known anyone else who was vegan, so my knowledge of places we could eat at is nil. so, ottawa vegans: where do you recommend going for lunch/dinner? i do know that the table is out, as she's not a fan of that restaurant. anywhere else?

For starters: The Table on Wellington, and the Green Door on Main Street. There's a vegetarian place off Preston I've heard about, but I've never tried it.

This is when I wish we had the same variety of vegetarian/vegan restaurants as Toronto does.

True, but there's more selection at the Green Door, imo.

I find the Green Door is really bland though, at least The Table has flavour.

The Green Door actually cooks food and doesn't put cilantro in everything. It's also cozier and much better lit.
Sacred Garden is a vegan thai restaurant, 1300 Bank St.

There's one in Gatineau... I don't know if that's too far? Chez Le Thai (It's on Laval)

What kind of food they like? Most Indian places have numerous vegetarian and vegan options.

Thai places apparently have vegan options but I am not vegan so I wouldn't know.

I was going to suggest The Green Door too. even I like it, and I'm not veg*an.

http://www.zenkitchen.ca/ gets raves, even from non-vegans.

I love the Sacred Garden, they have so many yummy yummy things.

The Green Door is meh, in my opinion. I ate there a bunch in 2007 and thought it was great, but seriously, it's exactly the same food every time, and the atmosphere is crappy. I hate cafeteria style/buffets, though.

There's a place with a name like Zen Kitchen... somehting with Zen in it anyway.
They've gotten pretty great reviews, and I know the owners to be really quality people, with a passion for what they do.

I would not recommend the Green Door.

I would recommend Green Earth on Preston St. though. It's not super fantastic food, but it's cheap and delicious.

Also Ceylonta on Somerset near Bank has an awesome selection of vegan sri lankan food (though the restaurant is not strictly vegan).

So Good on Somerset near Bronson also has a massive selection of vegan food (again, not completely vegan). I've had mixed results there, with some of the best chinese food I've ever had, but some of the dishes can be bland. The menu is massive.

Agreed with not recommending Green Door, every time I've gone I've been severely disappointed.

I also agree- So Good is SUPER yummy, tons of vegetarian options and a decent about of Vegan.

Yes, definitely third So-Good, just double check about vegan ingredients because alot of their stuff has egg but they'll make almost anything vegan.

Every time I eat at the Green Door I get sick and also the staff treat you like you're worthless especially if you don't understand how their restaurant works or you line up in the wrong place.

You could ask her too - I didn't have too much trouble eating at most places in town (I just sub or remove ingredients). You don't need to go to a special restaurant (though it does make things easier).

Most sushi places are a go - lots of veggie sushi. A lot of Vietnamese places can do veggie dishes without fish sauce.

I lived in Ottawa for 5 years as a vegan, and while there aren't any many options as, say, Montreal or Toronto, there are still plenty of places to go. To be honest, there is virtually no place where a vegan can't get fed, although sometimes the options aren't fantastic or are just poor value (i.e. the Hard Rock Cafe where a "veggie sandwich" is two pieces of skinny toast with limp veggies and no other sauces/garnishes, for $13).

Aside from Green Door and The Table, Perfection Satisfaction Promise on Laurier near the U of O is my fave place in the city! The food is so cheap and good and the atmosphere is very tranquil. Govinda's is brilliant for a really cheap meal ($5 I think?) without the frills.

I have never been to So Good in Chinatown but I hear it's A+.

Other restaurants which aren't vegan but where I have had an incredible vegan meal with great value include Ahora (Mexican, on Dalhousie), Blue Cactus (in the Market, try the veg fajitas--wow!!), Milestones (near the war memorial, try the thai noodle salad), Ceylonta (on Somerset), the Manx (on Bank St, they have vegan options on the menu), Haveli's (Indian in the Market), African Palace and Horn of Africa (Ethiopian on Rideau St).

Finding vegan food in the city is easier than you think. Good luck!

I second Horn of Africa. I was vegan in Ottawa for about 10 years and it was a staple of my life. Another great Ethiopian place is Habesha, though I here it's moved since I left Ottawa, I'm not sure where it's located now.

FYI: Habesha moved to Rideau St.
